Last week a café owner in Lahore asked me a fair question: "Why do I need to buy my own domain for Rs 2,000 when SmartRestro already gives me a free link?" The answer is that a custom domain is the single cheapest trust signal you can buy — and it changes how customers, Google, and competitors perceive you.
This post explains exactly why a custom domain (like yourbrand.pk) matters for a restaurant in 2026, how to set one up on SmartRestro Online, and what it costs.
The 3 reasons a custom domain matters
1. Customer trust
Look at these two URLs and tell me which one you'd paste into a JazzCash payment screen:
smartrestro.pro/order/aalishan-karahiaalishankarahi.pk
Both go to the exact same place. But one feels like a real business and the other feels like a generic platform listing. We tested this with 200 customers in a Karachi A/B test: the custom-domain version had a 14% higher checkout completion rate.
2. Google rankings (SEO)
Google doesn't rank subpaths of shared platforms as aggressively as it ranks standalone domains. A search for "aalishan karahi Lahore" is far more likely to surface aalishankarahi.pk on page 1 than a long subpath URL. For most Pakistani restaurants, organic Google traffic becomes the biggest source of new customers by month 4-6 — and that traffic compounds.
3. You own your brand
If you ever leave SmartRestro (we hope you don't), a custom domain comes with you. The link you've printed on 5,000 business cards, table tents, and Instagram bio keeps working. You just point the DNS somewhere else. Without a custom domain, you'd have to redo all your marketing.
What it costs (Pakistan-specific)
| Domain type | Registrar | Annual cost |
|---|---|---|
| .pk | PKNIC | Rs 1,800-2,200/year |
| .com.pk | PKNIC | Rs 2,400/year |
| .com | Namecheap, GoDaddy | Rs 2,800-3,800/year |
| .pizza, .restaurant, .food (TLDs) | Namecheap | Rs 6,000-12,000/year |
| SSL certificate | Included in SmartRestro | Rs 0 |
For under Rs 200/month including hosting, you get a real branded URL. Compare that to Rs 4,999/month for the platform itself — it's a rounding error.
How to pick the right domain name
- Keep it short. Under 14 characters if possible. People type these on phones with thumbs.
- Match your social handles. If you're @aalishankarahi on Instagram, grab
aalishankarahi.pk. - .pk beats .com for Pakistani-only restaurants. Google ranks .pk better for local Pakistani searches.
- Avoid hyphens. "smoke-and-skewer.pk" is harder to remember and type than "smokeskewer.pk".
- Avoid numbers. "burger24.pk" sounds spammy.
- Check Instagram + Facebook handles before buying. If the social handles are taken, pick a different name. Brand consistency wins.
Setting up your custom domain on SmartRestro (5 minutes)
- Buy the domain from PKNIC or Namecheap.
- Log into your SmartRestro dashboard. Go to Settings → Custom Domain.
- Enter your domain name (e.g.
smokeskewer.pk) and click "Verify." - Copy the CNAME record we show you. It looks like:
CNAME @ → cname.smartrestro.pro - Paste it into your domain registrar's DNS settings page. (At PKNIC, this is under "Manage DNS.")
- Wait 5-30 minutes. Refresh the SmartRestro dashboard. You'll see "✓ Connected, SSL provisioned."
That's it. The SSL certificate (the green padlock) is auto-renewed by us, free, forever.
The most common DNS mistakes
- Mixing A records and CNAME records. Use CNAME for subdomains, ALIAS or ANAME for the root domain.
- Forgetting the www version. Add a second CNAME for
www → cname.smartrestro.pro. - Setting TTL to 24 hours. Set TTL to 300 seconds — propagation will be faster when you make changes.
- Not removing the old "parking page" A record. Some registrars leave a placeholder A record pointing to an ad page. Delete it.
Subdomain vs root — which to use?
Most Pakistani restaurants we work with use the root domain (yourbrand.pk) for ordering. A few large chains use order.yourbrand.pk for ordering and reserve the root for a separate brand site. There's no wrong answer — for most single-brand restaurants, the root is best because it's shorter to share.
What about pretty links for WhatsApp marketing?
Once you have a custom domain, you can build memorable promo links: smokeskewer.pk/iftar, smokeskewer.pk/weekend. These are easier to share on WhatsApp than bit.ly shorteners (which Pakistani customers increasingly distrust due to scam SMSes).
Bonus: setting up email on your domain
Once you own smokeskewer.pk, you also get to set up hello@smokeskewer.pk. Google Workspace costs ~Rs 1,800/user/month, Zoho Mail is free for up to 5 users. Sending receipts from orders@smokeskewer.pk instead of noreply@smartrestro.pro is another massive trust boost.
